Development of a Dental Diagnostic Terminology - Ontology

Our project has the goal of mapping all the dental concepts used in general dental practice

Currently, use of standardized dental diagnostic information in dentistry is limited. Among other factors, the lack of a common standard prevents the sharing of clinical information among dental practitioners. This project has the goal of capturing the concepts commonly used in dental practice. We are in the process of structuring this information in order to create a standarized terminology - ontology that includes diagnostic information.

This project is contributory and synergistc with the ANSI HITSP Technical Committee Terminology efforts and should be formally coordinated with those activities as well as with ADA SCDI collbaorative efforts in both HITSP and with other HITSP SDO, such as ASTM E-31. Terminologies and Concept Ontologies for oral health participation in a unified Health Information Domain will require a "Common EHR Model" to idientify the the data attributes and data representations that are identified, first for Individual Health and then abstracted for Population Health e.g. Reportable Data). Collaborative participation with standards SDOs and activities will enable quick documnetation of those vocabulary of clear value to dnetal specilty practitioners in a form that can be easily described to other health disciplines and their use of an integrated Health Information Domain. Non oral health disciplines do not yet have an explicit and defined description of these area of common ground. NIH and NIDCR can quickly appreciate how these informtics convention can contribute to the science concepts that appear in Individual Health.
